About Us

"Mayfair on Cavell is quiet, comfortable and very well priced, with arguably the best value spa suites and family apartments available in Hobart"

Bernard and Matty Ludeke dreamed of Motel Mayfair in 1967 when they bought the original house at 17 - 19 Cavell Street West Hobart. Bernard and Matty had moved from their first Mayfair (located in Goulbourn Street, Hobart, not far from the present Mayfair on Cavell) after learning that the Government were planning to purchase their property to build a road.

The main house was built in 1915 and at one time was home to Hobart Lord Mayor Robert Eccles Snowden. The property was somewhat run down having previously been used as a guest house and neglected. The couple lovingly restored and modified the house and then added the motel units we see today a few years later.

Motel Mayfair on Cavell opened for business in 1970, known then as Motel Mayfair. The first night of accommodation was 6 March 1970 and the 11 completed rooms were all full on this night. Bernard passed away in 1975 aged 67, but Matty continued to run the motel until her retirement at the end of 2007, aged 84. Bernard's great-grandson, Michael Ludeke, took over as Manager after Matty's retirement.

On 28 August 2009 Matty passed away just prior to her 86th birthday. In 2009 Motel Mayfair on Cavell was a finalist in the 2009 Hobart Exceptional Customer Service Awards and Matty Ludeke received a posthumous national award for 71 years of service to the hotel/motel industry in Tasmania. On 6 March 2010 Motel Mayfair on Cavell proudly celebrated 40 years of operation.
